How many times have you promised to get fit, cut back on the booze, or lay off the takeaways while recovering from New Year’s Eve? But the stats show less than 40% of us stick with our New Year’s resolutions after just one month.
This year things can be different. We’ve found the best places to kick-start your New Year’s resolutions, from booze-free bars to boot camps.
We all know someone doing Dry January – in 2016 one in six of us took part – so why not join them? There’s plenty of places to enjoy a night out without going all out on the booze. London’s favourite is Redemption Bar with two branches in Shoreditch and Notting Hill. Founded by an ex-party girl, Redemption offers coconut-water cocktails, plus other ‘dry’ drinks, and indulgent veggie dishes. The tongue-in-cheek atmosphere means you won’t feel like you’re being preached at either.
Walk on the wild side
The idea behind eating Paleo has now spread to fitness; exercising in the way we evolved to. Leading the movement is Wildfitness, who run training sessions every Saturday morning on Hampstead Heath and Battersea Park in London. Learn how to run, climb, and crawl like our ancestors, helping you develop a naturally strong, lean body. Wildfitness also run retreats in the Scottish Highlands, starting later this year.
Be brave at a boot camp
If you need a bit more help getting your resolutions underway, try a residential boot camp. The original – and women-only – boot camp is The Camp near Dumfries in Scotland. You’ll follow a program of activities like orienteering, trekking and circuit training, plus a balanced diet of healthy food, and there’s even a sauna to ease aching muscles.
For those who want something a bit more intense, the GI Jane boot camp in Kent (about an hour from London) is ideal. The schedule of running, boxing, circuits and assault courses will give you a toned bod and a newfound respect for army recruits…
Eat clean and green
If our round-up of Edinburgh’s best veggie restaurants has left you hungry (sorry) for more, here are our top picks for healthy cafés across the UK:
· Mildred’s in London – innovative, internationally inspired vegetarian dishes, like gyoza dumplings and Sri Lankan potato curry, mean the queues in all three branches are long but worth the wait.
· Mono in Glasgow – enjoy a totally animal-free menu, ginger beer brewed in-house, locally roasted ethical coffee, and some of the best new and live music in the city.
· Earthy in Edinburgh – the ethical café chain is not veggie but boasts some of the best local, seasonal, and organic food around. Plus, you can pick up your green groceries at the on-site shops.
We’ll take the strain
Before you begin any New Year’s resolutions, let us treat you to one last little bit of luxury. Enjoy a comfy bunk and a complimentary light breakfast on our sleeper service between London and Scotland, so you arrive rested and ready to turn over a new leaf.
