Our favourite seasonal shopping haunts

Seasonal shopping

‘Tis the season of goodwill, merriment and food and drink. And SHOPPING. Lots of shopping. And sales. But where are the best destinations to flex your credit card (but not too much) on our national bus route?

Whether you want designer-name festive gifts at reasonable prices or Boxing Day savings to launch you into 2017, have a think about these...

Edinburgh: Princes Street

There are few better times to visit Scotland’s capital city than during the festive season, so why not squeeze in a trip to the sales? Princes Street is not only packed with shops – all of which make a big thing out of both Christmas AND new-year sales – but is also beautifully scenic, with a fine view of the castle and old town. You’ll find department stores like Jenners, John Lewis, House Of Fraser and Marks & Spencer, but also several independent stores and lovely places to eat and drink in between. There’s also the recently-refurbished Waverley Mall.

Glasgow: The Style Mile

Did you know Glasgow is the largest retail centre outside London? Well, it is. And if you head for Buchanan Street over the festive season and into the new year, you’ll find a mix of stunning products and great deals. It’s also got stunning architecture, lots of big names and sometimes even a few bagpipes, too. Buchanan Galleries has more than 90 different outlets across its four floors; and you can enjoy lunch in the mall on Princes Square, where an intricate glass roof covers a choice of restaurants.

London: The big stores

If you think you’ll struggle to go the distance, department stores are a fantastic way to tick a lot of different shopping boxes at once – and walk a shorter distance (well, depending on the size of the store, of course). Fortunately, London is swimming in them. Harrods, Harvey Nichols, House of Fraser, John Lewis, Liberty, Selfridges and Debenhams are all great places to pick up deals. And perhaps enjoy a few nibbles and drinks, too. Well, you’ve got to keep up your shopping energy, haven’t you?

London: Constant savings

Sometimes, waiting until Boxing Day simply isn’t an option – either because you need to buy stuff NOW, or because you can’t face being part of the ravenous, bargain-hunting swarm. It’s therefore handy that places such as London Designer Outlet exist, with up to 70% off all year round, including the festive season. It’s located in Wembley Park and features big brands like M&S, Superdry, Clarks, GAP and Guess, among many more.
